- 1 teaspoon avocado oil or light sesame oil optional
- 2 cups basmati rice unrinsed, or long-grain white rice, well-rinsed
- Pinch of sea salt
- 1 small bay leaf
- ½ teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon finely grated lime zest
- 2 tablespoons freshly chopped cilantro
- 1 ½ tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice from 1–2 limes
- 1 ½ tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice from 1–2 lemons
Step 1: Prepare the Rice
Begin by rinsing your rice in cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming overly sticky. Combine the rinsed rice with a pinch of sea salt, the bay leaf, and ground cumin in a medium saucepan.
Step 2: Add Water and Cook
Pour in 4 cups of water into the saucepan. Bring it to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low.
Cover the saucepan and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Allow the rice to absorb all the water.
Step 3: Fluff the Rice
When the rice has cooked and absorbed all the water, remove the saucepan from heat. Let it sit covered for about 5 minutes to steam. After this resting period, use a fork to fluff the rice gently, breaking up any lumps.
Step 4: Stir in the Flavor
Take out the bay leaf. Add in the lime zest, lime juice, lemon juice, and freshly chopped cilantro. Stir gently until everything is well combined.
- Rinse Your Rice: As mentioned, rinsing is key. This step ensures that the rice is light and fluffy.
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh lime juice and cilantro significantly enhance flavor. Dried or bottled options can’t match that vibrancy.
- Let It Rest: Allowing the rice to steam after cooking makes a difference. This helps achieve a better texture.
- Customize the Flavor: Feel free to add other fresh herbs like parsley or green onions for added depth.
- Pair Thoughtfully: Think about what proteins and sides will complement your rice. That can turn a simple dish into a feast.
